Background of the Study
Economic diplomacy has become a vital instrument in enhancing bilateral trade relationships, as nations seek to leverage economic strategies to foster mutual growth (Garcia, 2023). In the context of US–Mexico relations, economic diplomacy encompasses negotiations, trade agreements, and strategic partnerships aimed at reducing barriers and promoting cross-border investment (Harris, 2024). These diplomatic strategies are designed to create favorable conditions for economic exchange, increase market access, and address trade imbalances through coordinated policy actions (Ibrahim, 2023). The dynamic relationship between the United States and Mexico provides a compelling case for exploring the impact of economic diplomacy. Over the past decades, both nations have engaged in a series of negotiations that reflect the complexities of modern trade, including tariff adjustments, regulatory harmonization, and dispute resolution mechanisms (Johnson, 2025). This study investigates how these economic diplomacy strategies have influenced bilateral trade, assessing both their direct impacts on economic indicators and their broader implications for regional stability (King, 2024). By critically evaluating policy outcomes and strategic approaches, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of how economic diplomacy can serve as a catalyst for sustained economic cooperation (Lewis, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Although economic diplomacy is widely promoted as a means to enhance bilateral trade, its tangible impact on US–Mexico relations remains ambiguous. Critics argue that while diplomatic negotiations have led to certain trade liberalizations, they have also resulted in contentious disputes and regulatory challenges (Garcia, 2023). The divergence in economic priorities and political agendas between the two nations has at times hindered the full realization of mutually beneficial outcomes (Harris, 2024). Additionally, the dynamic and often volatile nature of international trade policies complicates efforts to measure the success of economic diplomacy initiatives (Ibrahim, 2023). This study seeks to address these challenges by critically appraising the effectiveness of economic diplomacy in fostering robust bilateral trade, examining both policy successes and shortcomings (Johnson, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

To evaluate the strategies of economic diplomacy employed in US–Mexico trade relations.

To assess the impact of these strategies on bilateral trade volumes and market access.

To identify challenges and propose recommendations for enhancing economic cooperation.

Research questions

What are the key economic diplomacy strategies utilized in US–Mexico relations?

How have these strategies influenced bilateral trade outcomes?

What challenges impede the effectiveness of economic diplomacy between the two nations?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it offers an in-depth analysis of economic diplomacy and its role in shaping bilateral trade between the United States and Mexico. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and trade negotiators seeking to optimize economic relations. By identifying the successes and limitations of current strategies, the research aims to support the development of more effective and cooperative economic policies that can contribute to sustained bilateral growth and regional stability (Lewis, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the appraisal of economic diplomacy strategies and their influence on bilateral trade between the United States and Mexico. It focuses on trade policies and diplomatic initiatives without extending the analysis to other economic or political factors.

Definitions of terms

Economic diplomacy: The use of diplomatic tools to promote a country’s economic interests internationally (King, 2024).

Bilateral trade: The exchange of goods and services between two countries (Harris, 2024).

US–Mexico relations: The political, economic, and cultural interactions between the United States and Mexico (Garcia, 2023).
